Local Yocal BBQ & Grill- a must try!

One of my favorite things about McKinney is the historic charm that oozes from the Town Center and Mill Districts (aka Downtown & the area just east of the square). Another favorite is how McKinney business owners take these historic buildings and turn them into a beautiful mix of modern industrial meets vintage. That’s what you’ll get with the newly opened Local Yocal BBQ & Grill. Oh, and I should also mention that you’ll get amazing food with meats of the highest quality and craft cocktails that delight!

 

Local Yocal is by no means a new player to the McKinney scene. Owner Matt Hamilton has been serving high-quality meats from his farm to market shop off the McKinney Square since 2010, and before that selling at the McKinney Farmers Market. Matt is very passionate about his grass-fed beef and that passion can be felt in his restaurant as well.

 

You can find Local Yocal BBQ & Grill not far from the downtown square - head east on Louisiana St across highway 5. LOYO sits right next to the train tracks in the historic King Grocer distribution warehouse, which they pay tribute to in the restaurant. Other historic charms being showcased are the exposed bricks, rusted tin tile backsplash and even black and white photos of important McKinnites. Mixed in with this historic charm are rich and industrial decor pieces that creates a perfect setting for a classy night out. But enough about ambiance, let’s talk food!

 

 

 

 

 

Everything I’ve tried so far at LOYO has been mouth-watering. You can tell the ingredients are top notch and that the chef really cares about what gets placed in front of his guests. The lunch and dinner menus are quite different - think modern barbeque for lunch and casual steakhouse and cocktails for dinner. Both menus also include an array of tasty salads for our vegetarian friends. Cassie and I recently had a chance to stop by and check out the lunch menu and here are some of our favs:

 

The Pickles and The Pig- charcuterie board with sausage smoked in house. Our favorite was the jalapeno cheddar sausage and the Lavash bread that goes along is a-d-d-i-c-t-i-n-g!

 

 

Smoked Red Pepper Pimento Cheese-  yummy, yummy, yummy! I’m picky with my pimento cheese, and LOYO has this dish right on. Cassie, our East-Coaster-turned-Texan had never tried pimento - this version made her a believer!

 

 

The Hamilton Burger- named after the owner himself, this monster began as a challenge to create a burger so large, it would be nearly impossible to finish. Loaded with a juicy Wagyu beef patty, brisket, sausage, and bacon, Cassie and I could hardly make it through half!

 

LOYO Mac n’ Cheese- this could be a meal on its own, it was so filling! This is one of the cheesiest mac n’ cheeses I’ve ever had, and I loved it! Add in the bacon and green chiles, and you’ve got mac n’ cheese heaven.

 

 

Flypside- I won’t even attempt to share all the wonderful ingredients in this beautiful cocktail, but it was refreshing and delish! With amazing bar staff serving up some artful sips, you can’t go wrong with any cocktail you pick.

 

 

So if it isn’t obvious by now, I loved Local Yocal BBQ & Grill and I highly recommend that everyone stops by! It’s has a great setting, superb staff, mouth-watering food, and gorgeous cocktails, how can you go wrong? Your next business lunch, date night or girls night out needs to be here.
