We must admit, we don't have a lot of experience with Bed and Breakfasts. Between the two of us we’ve got less than five stays under our belts and all those were too many years ago to even count. So we weren't exactly sure what to expect when we walked into downtown McKinney's newest B&B. To be honest, we were both expecting an old historic home, lots of dark wood, creaky floors, and maybe even some musty smells. Well we couldn't have been more off base! The Neathery Estate IS a historic home, but nothing about it seems old.
Bright and airy, this bed and breakfast has been updated from top to bottom. The charming parts of its history have been kept intact but Tiffany, the proprietor, has done an amazing job at modernizing the
house - from both design and practical standpoints. Mixed in with beautiful antique pieces you'll find contemporary chairs and wooden signs with magical Harry Potter quotes. Modern conveniences are found in every room of the house; for example, there's an electrical ice maker by the bar area which is stocked with glassware and mixers, there's a big flat screen 4K TV in the sitting room, the chandeliers in the suites are on dimmers (awesome!), each room’s TV is connected to Netflix and Hulu, and there are USB charger stations by the beds. It's no wonder the B&B's slogan is "Modern Comfort. Grand History". It truly is the perfect combination of the two.
And don't forget about breakfast! Tiffany cooks breakfast fresh for her guests each morning. The most important meal of the day is served in the conservatory, a room with a wall of windows and a door leading to the back porch. You almost feel as if you're sitting outside among the plants and trees. It is a very calm and relaxing space and the tables are dressed with vintage linens and china. There is something about drinking coffee in a delicate teacup versus the monstrous mugs we have at home that just makes it seem special. Mini cookies and pastries were waiting on each table (each suite had their own dining table) to enjoy with the coffee while Tiffany prepared the hot breakfast. The menu is different each time, but we enjoyed a hot scramble with peppers and onions, mini waffles with maple syrup, and berries with homemade whipped cream. It was all accompanied by fresh orange juice and large slices of watermelon. The breakfast brought us back to life and we were ready for the day!
Even after all the impressive amenities inside the Neathery Estate, the outdoor space does not disappoint. The backyard is a surprising oasis tucked in McKinney's historic district. A gorgeous covered porch leads to a beautiful private backyard with colorful gardens surrounding a large saltwater pool, with beach entry and a soothing waterfall. There are lounge chairs and even a firepit to the side with adirondack chairs, just waiting for a smores session.
Now how did this historic home turn into a charming yet modern getaway just blocks from downtown? Well that’s where Tiffany Bellino comes in. Tiffany is a North Texas native who moved away to study at Berry College in Georgia. After graduation she worked at Georgia’s Claremont House, a Victorian Gothic style bed and breakfast dating back to 1882. That’s of course where she fell in love with historic homes and where Tiffany gained her B&B expertise. Tiffany’s dream though was to open a bed and breakfast of her own and what better spot than back home in McKinney's historic district! Enter the Neathery Estate, a Colonial Revival built in 1912 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Sam Neathery was a Texas lawyer who practiced law out of what is now the upstairs library.
This gorgeous 3-story home sits on a huge corner lot shaded by hundred year old trees and a massive front lawn. The estate is only about a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive to The Square. So even though you feel as if you’re staying far from the bustling city in your own private oasis, you are in fact as close to the action as it gets!
The Neathery Estate has 4 suites for individual rental, check out the stunning photos and descriptions of each suite here. You also have the option to rent out the entire house.
