6 Pro Tips to Enjoy Oktoberfest with the Kiddos

When many people hear "Oktoberfest" they likely think about huge steins of beer, brats, and German costumes. While these are plentiful at McKinney's annual Oktoberfest celebration, there are also a TON of great family friendly activities, like carnival rides, petting zoo, face painting, rock climbing wall and weenie dog races.

Read on for our pro tips to avoid lines, maximize family fun,

and find what's new for the kiddos this year!

There are few things less enjoyable than trying to get an excited kid to wait patiently in line for tickets at a festival. There are too many fun distractions all around! So why not skip the lines and head straight for the food and fun? Your kids (and your blood pressure) will thank you.

Tickets are currently for sale at multiple spots in downtown McKinney as well as Market Street on Eldorado. Click HERE for the full list of locations, and go grab your tickets this week!

Festival parking can be stressful. Skip the searching and the long walk back to the car… grab the free shuttle to and from the festival at from First McKinney Baptist Church, 1615 E. Louisiana. Buses will leave every 15 minutes and will operate during these days/times:

  • Friday - 4 p.m. to midnight

  • Saturday - 10 a.m. to midnight

  • Sunday, September 24, noon to 5 p.m.

The Kinder Korner is where the party is at for the youngins. Highlights include:

  • A carnival with games and rides

  • A petting zoo with animals galore

  • Perot Museum Tech Truck (NEW) The truck features eight hands-on stations that incorporate a variety of materials and technologies.

  • Play Street Museum pop up (NEW) The 26-foot-long retro Airstream® is stocked full of museum quality interactive exhibits, learning based toys, creative play structures, and arts and crafts materials.

Don't miss the German arts & crafts and the Weenie dog races on Saturday afternoon 9/29!

10 - 2 - German arts & crafts! Lebkuchenherzen (Gingerbread Hearts)

12 - 5 - Weenie dog races: Held at the Gemüetlichkeit (goodwill) Games! It’s our fun-filled “Competition Area” on East Louisiana Street

Get your chicken dance on! There are music and dance groups throughout the whole festival and a little dance break is good for everyone. Find the complete lineup HERE.

Because kids like to give you about 3.2 seconds of notice that they "have to go"... there are several restroom locations within the festival grounds and in the basement of the McKinney Performing Arts Center. These locations are identified on the site map.

We hope this tip isn't necessary for anyone! But festivals can be crowded and kids sometimes wander. There is a designated area for anyone who is lost, which is helpful for the whole family to know before you go. The basement gallery of the McKinney Performing Arts Center serves as the Found Children / Lost Parents location.

Oktoberfest is one of our favorite annual McKinney festivals!

We can't wait to check it out, and maybe we'll see you there!
