What is Empty Bowls?
Empty Bowls McKinney is an annual fund-raising event that brings together artists and the community to “fight hunger one bowl at a time.” There are now Empty Bowls events all over the world! Community Lifeline Center is the primary beneficiary of Empty Bowls McKinney. Proceeds from Empty Bowls McKinney support Community Lifeline Center's food pantry and programs to address food insecurity. The first McKinney event in 2012 hosted 100 attendees and raised $4,500. Last year's event in 2017 served over 800 people, and raised over $60,000.
When you arrive at the event you get to choose the handmade bowl that you'll take home (the empty bowl). There's a card in each bowl with a personal story of someone in Collin County affected by food insecurity. See below for some cards from last year. Often people choose a bowl according to the card inside, because the story speaks to them.
Each food vendor has a booth and you choose where to go for soup. Visit one booth, or all of them! You can get a delicious sample from each spot. Caudalie Crest Winery and TUPPS Brewery provide beer and wine for sale. Heads up, it's cash only for alcohol. There's even a swag bag for each attendee which includes (among other things) coupons from restaurants and a Whole Foods reusable bag.
Come for the cause, stay for the food!
Here is an exclusive SNEAK PEEK at some of the menu items for this year's event:
Hugs Cafe - Tomato Basil Soup
Spoons - Pumpkin soup, bakery bites, and a biscuit bar (soup and bakery bites pictured above)
McKinney's Sweet Spot - Gooey butter bites and brownie bites
Local Yocal - Smoked Italian Sausage with Tuscan Kale soup
Patina Green - "Leaves and Roots" soup - vegetarian and gluten free, to be developed and made from fresh organic local produce delivered that week
The Pub - Beir Cheese soup
Layered - Smoked Salmon Chowder

Guests take home an empty handcrafted bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the local community and of children and adults who go to sleep hungry. The bowl remains empty to symbolize all the empty bowls in the world. (You don't eat out of that bowl at the event). Artists and community members make and donate bowls. SPARC Studio, Walls of Clay, McKinney Art Studio, and artist volunteers play a key role in running the artistic/bowl aspect of the planning. One bowl is included in the ticket price. Additional bowls may be purchased for $15.

Local artists and celebrities (including Mayor George Fuller, Police Chief Greg Conley, and Empty Bowls McKinney Event Coordinator Jamie St. Clair) make larger masterpieces for silent auction which happens online. These bowls are on display at The Heard-Craig House. You can bid online, even on your phone; you don't need to be at the event to bid. Click HERE to view the online auction.
