Meet McKinney- MRC

  1. move at a speed faster than a walk, never having both or all the feet on the ground at the same time.

If you find yourself at Market Street off El Dorado and Lake Forest on a Saturday morning you might have noticed the large group of individuals hanging out at the cafe. All are a little flushed and for some reason they keep downing water in between their coffee sips. Meet the McKinney Running Club. A group of walkers, joggers, hobby runners and competitive athletes. All enjoy a good run, socializing and it seems coffee. Saturday morning runs aren’t the only event this 200+ member club organizes, but it is the most popular.

MRC was founded in 2010 with the goal of joining together individuals who have a passion (or curiosity) for running and also a desire to meet new neighbors. Now MRC members can be seen running all around town and in marathons across the country. You’ll also find MRC families gathering at various parks to picnic or hit the trails together.

On December 2 MRC is hosting the first annual Run the Mill 5K & Fun Run at TUPPS Brewery. 100% of the proceeds go towards a scholarship for a McKinney graduating senior who participates in cross country and/or track. MRC has teamed up with the McKinney Education Foundation to help award the scholarship. The idea to host a run and scholarship came from some long-time members who wanted to get MRC more involved in the community and give back. After the run is finished all are welcome to come party at TUPPS where there will be a silent auction, live music and food. More details about how to sign up for the run and how to apply for the scholarship can be found here.

So, what if you’re thinking about joining the McKinney Running Club? There is a yearly registration fee, $25 for yourself and only $40 for the household, but before you commit you can always join a run and see if it’s for you. All levels are welcome, from 1 mile walkers to 15 mile runners. Check out MRC’s FaceBook page for the next meet-up. If running is your thing and you want to meet more locals then I suggest you give MRC a try; it’s a friendly and welcoming group!
