McKinney Farmers Market - not just fruits and veggies

Hummus, and chocolate, and wine… oh my!

The Historic McKinney Farmers Market is certainly not like the boring old three stand farmers market from when I was growing up. It is a foodie's dream! Of course there is fresh produce - bold, beautiful colors all locally grown and delicious. But in addition to the fruits and vegetables there are so many extra treats. If you've never been, here is just a short list of some of the things you'll find at the Farmers Market that might surprise you:

  • Wine

  • Cold brew coffee

  • Homemade hummus and pita chips

  • Hot fresh empanadas

  • Salsa, sauces, and jams

  • Pastries, toffee, pies, and bread

  • Organic meats and eggs

  • Fresh cut flowers

  • Candles, jewelry, lotions

Ample samples

Any Trader Joe's or Whole Foods shopper will also appreciate a big perk of visiting the Farmers Market: S-A-M-P-L-E-S! You can try before you buy: hummus, chocolate, cheese, wine (yes, wine!), cold brew coffee, bread, nuts, honey… the list goes on and on. My favorite sample of the day was the ghost pepper chocolate covered toffee!

Get to know the artisans and farmers

While you're at the stand, enjoying your amazing sample, take a minute to talk with the vendor - they would love to tell you about their product and you might learn something new or walk away with killer meal planning inspiration. I was lucky enough to do both, after sampling chipotle goat cheese and chatting with Keith from Rosa Family Farm (a fellow foodie and fan of McKinney's food and drink scene). He mentioned his family had made three cheese chipotle mac and cheese from their homemade chipotle goat cheese… of course I had to try to recreate what sounded like an amazing recipe! HERE is the recipe is used as a base, but I changed the cheeses to: mozzarella, sharp white cheddar, and Rosa Family Farm chipotle goat cheese.

The historic farmers market in downtown Mckinney is every Saturday from 8:00am-12:00pm. Click HERE for a list of vendors. There is another smaller McKinney farmers market at Adriatica on Thursdays from 3:00-6:00pm.

After this article was written, the Historic McKinney Farmers Market at Chestnut Square was temporarily relocated, for the remainder of the 2017, season just north of the square at Tennessee and Hunt Streets (in front of the Roy and Helen Hall Library, 101 E. Hunt Street).
